Just 3½ hours by train from Vienna, Budapest is a city dramatically carved in two by the River Danube and linked by a magnificent series of bridges.
Built into the hill on one side of the river stands the medieval town of Buda – largely destroyed during World War II but immaculately restored – housing the Castle District with its cobbled streets, the Royal Palace and the romantic Fishermen's Bastion with fine views across the river.
On the other side of the River Danube is Pest, a bustling shopping and business district, where the majority of hotels are located, rubbing shoulders with the Parliament and Opera House, Heroes' Square and St Stephen's Basilica. Relax at the thermal baths or enjoy a night at the Opera (both excellent value), or indulge in a rich coffee with a mouth-watering slice of Dobostorta.
However you choose to spend your time you'll be pleasantly surprised by what Budapest has to offer. Although now a member of the EU, Hungary’s capital proudly retains a strong eastern flavour which lends it a unique charm.
